On Friday, October 29th, it’s Black and Orange Day at Avenue Road!

Over the last number of years, we have chosen to wear black and orange as a way of marking the occasion of Halloween in a way that allows more students to participate. These activities may include special learning opportunities for students, such as arts and crafts designed to be inclusive for all. Like other years, we expect some students to show up in costume and they will be welcomed. Under Public Health guidelines, students who choose to wear a costume are still required to wear face coverings for health and safety in school, they should:

  • not wear a costume mask on top of their face covering
  • not remove their face covering and wear only a costume mask. A costume mask does not replace a face covering
  • not wear make-up, from below the eyes to ensure their face coverings are not dirtied

As in the past, we ask that students not bring any accessories along with their costumes and ensure that costumes are tasteful, do not instill fear or disparage any racial or ethnic group. We are also asking that families refrain from sending treats to school.

It is our aim that this approach will ensure students can continue to engage in learning activities that are similar to what we do with many other traditions and celebrations. Halloween is not cancelled. Fun and celebration will continue while ensuring that no child is left behind.
